Getting started

Match the crop to the container, not the other way around. Most leafy greens and herbs grow well in 6 to 8 inches of soil, while tomatoes, peppers, and root crops prefer deeper pots. Drainage holes and a lightweight potting mix matter more than the container's material.

Track the sun before planting. Vegetables need at least six hours of direct light, so a south-facing patio or balcony usually outperforms a shaded side yard. If light is limited, lean toward salad greens and herbs that tolerate partial shade.
