Mary’s Song – My Song

Luke 1:46-55 My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;
Because he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name;
And his mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,
He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of his mercy
Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

Robin Lee Hatcher shared this quote from The Journey by Adam Hamilton:
“Sometimes God asks us to be with people we don’t want to be with, to go places we don’t want to go, and to do things we don’t want to do. This is part of what Mary’s story teaches us. Mary is twice said to be favored by God, and yet God’s favor meant not a life of bliss, but a life of risk. It must have been hard to imagine that this is what it meant to be favored by God.” from The Journey by Adam Hamilton

Mary’s song can and should be one that each Church Age believer in the Lord Jesus Christ sings. Yes, He has done great and mighty things for us. Yes, He has set us apart to carry out great things. Yes, He has shown us mercy. As Hamilton points out, we are favored not for a life of bliss, but a life of risk. Am I willing to do as He requires of me? Are you?
